The Soviet Union was one of the two great national superpowers along with the United States. By this time the soviet states were quickly gaining or seeking independence from the Soviet Union and reforms would very soon usher in democratic elections and a restructuring of Russian policy. Power shifted from a communist system to a more democratic system bringing about the dissolution of the USSR by 1991.
