This coin depicts the unique and intricately carved Dabotap Pagoda, also known as the pagoda of many treasures, located in the Temple of Bulguksa in Gyeongju, South Korea. The pagoda is supposed to have been built in 751, the 10th year of the reign of the Shilla king Gyeongdeok. It is a great Korean historical treasure.

Gyeongdeok was the 35th ruler of the unified middle period of the Kingdom of Silla from reigning from 742 to 765.

Silla was a kingdom located in the south west and central part of the Korean Peninsula, one of three kingdoms, including the Kingdoms of Baekje and Goguryeo, that shared the Peninsula.

Gyeongdeok sought to further spread Buddism in his kingdom which was adopted by Silla kings in the mid-sixth century making it the official state religion beginning with King Beopheung. It is thought that the Bulguska Temple and the Seokguram Grotto were built during his reign.
