An interesting and lighthearted look at notgeld on this 1 mark bill dated Dec. 31, 1920 printed and sign by one Heinrich Appel from the municipality of Suderbrarup. On both the obverse and reverse you see men in top hats carting boxes and bags of notgeld. Also depicted on both sides are notgeld albums, an example of which can be found on this website HERE.
On the Obverse is a serial number: 07179. The men are carting boxes of notgeld into two large houses. The house on the left is label Notgeld Palast (emergency money palace), the one on the right is labeled Suderbrarup (municipality in Germany). The text reads:
gebe ich Heinrich Appel wohnhaft in suderbrarup kreis schleswig im notgeld palast heraus um dem kleingeldmangel in meinem hause abzuhelfen Gold and Silber erfolgt die einlosung wenn dieses metall wieder ubliches zahlungsmittel ist dez 31 1920.
"I, Heinrich Appel, resident of Suderbrarup in Schleswig, issue this notgeld in order to make up for the lack of small change in my house December 31 1920"
On the Reverse there are two men carrying notgeld and two notgeld albums. The text reads:
die umlauffrist ist unbeschrankt. der ablauf derseilben wird 24 stunden vorher durch bekannt gegeben. Am sichersten nimmt man das geld garnicht erst an, da auber meinem ehrlichen Gesicht siehe Schutzmarke, Jede Nachahmung ist eine Germeinheit. Uber eine million wird nicht ausgegeben - Schultzmarke HSA
"The end of the validity period will be announced 24 hours in advance by ringing a bell on the market. It is best to not accept this money at all since it is not covered by anything but my honest face. Trademarked: Any imitation is considered mean. More than one million will not be issued.
