This is a private issue merchant token minted by Cypress Iron Works of Houston around 1930. This was minted at a time when the people and industries in Houston were suffering the effects of the Great Depression. They were given to workers of the Cypress Iron Works that also operated a heavily discounted dry goods shop. Workers could opt for partial payment in these tokens to save money on food and supplies. This store bought and sold produce and goods from local farmers and craftsmen. Obverse: Decorative / BONA FIDE HARD TIMES Reverse: Wreath with star. Denomination of 1/2 cent inside wreath / SALUS POPULI SUPREMA LEX ESTO (The welfare of the people shall be the supreme law) |
